Abstract: The industrial and mining activities have an import impact on regional water environment and water security. It is of great significance for maintain the development of regional ecosystem and human development to deepen the research on the chemical composition and influencing factors of surface water and groundwater in the mining areas. Taking the surface water and groundwater in the Shendong mining area as the research object, the Piper diagrams, Gibbs, Na-normalized molar ratios, WQI method, and TH-TDS method were used to analyze the differences and characteristics of chemical composition and controlling factors of surface water and groundwater in this area, and evaluated the suitability for drinking. The results show that both groundwater and groundwater in the Shendong mining area were weakly alkaline, and the pH value of surface water was larger than that of groundwater as a whole. The EC value of groundwater was higher than that of surface water. The TDS value of groundwater was obviously higher than that of surface water. The TH value of groundwater was larger than that of surface water and varied in a wider range. Secondly, the dominant anions of surface water and groundwater were HCO3- and Na+, and the water types m were Cl-SO4-Ca-Mg. The chemical composition of surface water and groundwater in the Shendong mining area was mainly related to the weathering of silicate rock and evaporative rock, while carbonate weathering also played a certain role. Meanwhile, some points fell outside the triangle, which may be influenced by other factors. Finally, the suitability evaluation of surface water and groundwater quality in the study area showed that the groundwater quality in the study area was better than that of surface water on the whole, but attention should be paid to proper treatment when using the mine water as drinking water. This study can not only provide scientific basis for the management of surface water and groundwater in the Shendong mining area, but also provide scientific reference for other similar areas.
