The abnormal variation and its mechanism of well water level are analyzed based on multiple methods

Abstract:

Well water level is one of the important means of underground fluid observation in seismic geophysical field. The water level of Menyuan observation well began to rise greatly on September 24, 2019, reaching 6.85m, then decreased about 4.5m, and finally remained at a high water level about 2m above the normal background water level. Since January 8, 2022, the Menyuan Ms6.9, Delingha Ms5.8 and Ms6.0 earthquakes have occurred successively in the Qilian seismic zone. In order to explore the relationship between the two-stage abnormal changes and the earthquake, regional hydrologic survey, geochemical analysis and other methods were used to analyze the abnormal changes of water level in Menyuan well, and it was found that: The abnormal change of water level of Menyuan well since September 24, 2019 is influenced by the loading of regional stress and the seepage of reservoir operation. Then the stable high water level is the abnormal response of strong earthquake breeding process in Qilian seismic zone. With the occurrence of Ms6.9 earthquake in Menyuan, the water level gradually returns to normal.
